Conversation over breakfast

B. Can I ask you a question?

G. Uh-oh. Sounds ominous. What?

B. Can you really taste the difference between these home-grown snow peas and the bought ones?

G. There are some questions it’s better not to ask. These snow peas of ours are delicious!

B. But so are the ones from Harris Farm. So why do we bother?

G. Spare me. You are having a bout of philosophical musings. Well, I’ll tell you why. Because today I picked just the right amount of rocket for this salad, instead of buying a large bunch, half of which would wilt quietly away in the fridge.

B. I admit I did pick just the right amount of parsley for this morning’s scrambled eggs. So maybe you win that one. But next you’ll tell me our stuff’s cheaper than Harris Farm.

G. Of course I do. These peas cost us nothing.

B. Nothing….except the seeds to start them, the manure, the snail bait, the stakes…

G. Mmm…and the water bill.

B. Exactly. And everything’s ready to pick just when they’re super cheap in the market. Remember our broad beans. So the question is, why do we bother?

G. Because it’s fun. Simple as that. It’s fun.

B. Agreed. But so are philosophical musings.
