Puzzled

First attempt at growing everlastings (rhodanthe chlorocephala ssp rosea).

Suspecting wilt (see pic above), I kept pouring on the water. Didn’t help. Then, miraculously, just before bud opening, they raised their heads and straightened up. Question: what could be the botanical advantage of looking so dejected when in bud?
